Art Award Adventures

I generally dislike alliteration – but couldn’t resist today…

There must be something in the water and everyone’s decided to take the plunge and indulge in an art competition entering frenzy!

Aside from Visual Emporium’s Archibald portrait get together on Anzac day with the exceptional Fiona Patten MLC (president of the Australian Sex Party), artists have been busy creating visual magic with incredible results. Last week a somewhat oversized van squeezed its way down my tiny laneway and collected a selection of amazing portraits to whizz down to Sydney in an attempt to batter down the doors of the Archibald. I can hear the thumping now…

In the meantime, congratulations to Julia Godfree who won 2nd prize in the people’s choice at the Women’s HeArt exhibition, Steve Hillier who won first prize at the Ipswich Art Awards and Ursula Kelly and Darren Caswell who both won awards at the Big Art Awards at Royal Queensland Art Society. Sue Skuse and Steve Hillier are both finalists in the Holmes Art Prize with their exquisite bird works.

Last minute news at hand is that Steve Hillier is a finalist in the Lethbridge 10000, while Sue Skuse scored a listing in the on-line section. Sue has also has work accepted into the finals of the Brisbane Art Prize coming up in September at Lightspace, Fortitude Valley. Both Sue and Steve have works going into the St Stephens’ Art Show next week.

Up and coming competitions that are generating interest are the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture, Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and the Mosman Art Prize. All worth a shot at – there’s still time left to whip together equal amounts of genius and creativity to enter. For those of you in the mood for competition, art -prizes.com is a fantastic resource.
