The Curse of Cadmus
The Curse of Cadmus

Sometimes the gods can be downright bewildering! Poor Cadmus, trapped between Athena’s blessing and Ares’ rage, trod a fine line.
One water serpent was all it took, and Cadmus’ luck melted before his eyes. At the time, it didn’t seem, unreasonable to lob a deadly rock at the serpent who killed four of his trusty men…but in retrospect…
Ares was a god who knew how to hold a grudge. Despite Cadmus paying the penalty of enslavement for an Olympic year, Ares was not satisfied. He conspired with his lover, Aphrodite to convince her husband Hephaestus (what a threesome!) to create a sumptuous cursed necklace for the oblivious Cadmus to present Harmonia as a wedding gift.
The curse pursued the couple for decades, neither realising the necklace was the source of their woes.
Eventually, Cadmus called to Ares in despair begging for relief, and within moments transformed into a snake. Harmonia cried out for help in anguish and found herself entwined around her husband on the desert floor.
This original creation by Ilia Chidzey is as comfortable sitting flat on a table as he is clinging to a wall.
