This is part 6 of a series where I attempt to articulate the invisible torments that pursue humanity - both physical and emotional.
There is a cycle many people with chronic conditions risk becoming trapped in. Mind over matter. Matter over mind...
When a chronic condition prevents you from doing what you love, there is a tendency to become despondent. Melancholia and lethargy sets in and it becomes ever increasingly difficult to rise above it and resume the activities that bring you joy. We are also told that not only can depression initiate chronic conditions, it can also exacerbate them. Pausing to nurse your condition allows the mind to focus on the symptoms, intensifying the situation. The sufferer is often advised not to push themselves – not to exacerbate the symptoms. As a result they fall back into the slump and find the cycle rapidly accelerating until they cannot see the forest for the trees.
Breaking the cycle is difficult, but important. Take it from someone who's working on it!
