I think of my neurodivergent (ASD and ADHD) mind as being wired a little differently to the mainstream. A common experience shared by most neurodivergent people is being constantly inundated by a sensory tsunami. Our five senses are finely tuned into our surroundings, and are easily overwhelmed by incoming data.
What may appear to be a simple supermarket trip, has the potential to become a nightmare assault involving pungent odours, flickering fluorescents, a cacophony of colours, shrieking trolleys and disturbingly smooth dockets. In the face of this sensory overload, it’s no surprise that some of us will do anything to avoid going out and hide in our creative bat cave during daylight hours!
