Misophonia is a relatively new word... An age old condition, that has been tormenting me for very long time. After years of longwinded apologies and explanations as to why I need to leave the room, I have discovered that someone kind and clever has invented a lovely word - and now it can be real... No longer a figment of my neurosis, my sound sensitivities have been vindicated by having a proper name.
According to Wikipedia "misophonia (or selective sound sensitivity syndrome) is a disorder of decreased tolerance to specific sounds or their associated stimuli, or cues."
It doesn't sound like much, but a triggering noise can wriggle into my head and twist and squirm until I want to run and scream. The happy sound of popcorn being munched, chip packets rustling, straws slurping coke and hushed whispering has made movie going prohibitive, and I stay at home instead.
It turns out, I'm not the only one with this outrageous intolerance to innocuous noises. There are quite a few of us. Some don't like sniffing, tapping, clicking, licking, tearing paper, whistling... the list goes on. For us, ASMR creates a crisis rather than soothes...
So if you notice someone suddenly leaving the room for no apparent reason - it just might be a 'misophonic' (my invented word) escaping the clutches of the wrong noise.
